The Rugged Aluminum case is big in size compared to much smaller cases which comes with the Airpods or the Galaxy buds plus. The aluminum design makes it heavier as well compared to other charging cases. This may be frustrating for the users who would feel the extra weight in their pockets.
As an alternative, they do have an extra carrying case which is smaller in size. You can use it to carry the buds, but this carrying case does not have the charging capability.
When there is no mobile application it means there is no room for customization. This could be a big setback to the new UA Project Rock True Wireless X. Most of the major brands and popular truly wireless earbuds comes with full customization which makes life easier for the user. Especially, for users who would like to change the audio output according to their liking. However, JBL have not added this feature to add more value to the product.
The UA Project Rock True Wireless X is priced at $199.99 which is on the higher side. There are few other options in the similar price range or less. The Jabra Elite Active 75t is one of the better options. It has a more compact design and a smaller charging case. Most importantly it comes with Mobile Application which allows the user to customize the buds according to their wish.
The UA Project Rock True Wireless X has a similar design to its predecessor. The snug fit design is ideal for bass lovers. The collaboration with UA makes it trendier compared to other oridinary fitness earbuds. Unfortunately, there are no color options available apart from the black color. These buds come with physical buttons on either earbud for the controls.
There are three sizes of ear tips to choose from. There are three more ear fins to choose according to your preference. The ear fins help the buds to stay put while you work out in the gym. The ear tips help you achieve the snug fit which in return assures good passive noise isolation.
The lightweight hard plastic design makes these buds safe from impact damage. Another major reason why these buds are durable is the water resistance rating. IPX7 water resistance makes these buds sweat proof and waterproof, which is ideal for fitness fanatics. The buds can resist to been submerged in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
The UA Project Rock True Wireless X comes with physical buttons on either earbud. However, due to the unavailability of a Mobile Application, these controls are not customizable.
Left Bud Functions
Right Bud Functions
The physical buttons are easy to use and perfectly responsive. These buds support both Google Assistant and Siri as well.
This is an area where they are lacking due to the absence of a mobile application. This takes away the ability to customize the audio output or the controls for any users. Models like the Sennheiser Momentum 2 and the Jabra Elite Actie 75t has this feature which is great value addition.
There are few special features in these buds. One is the Dual Connect feature. It allows the user to use any earbud independently while the other bud is charging inside the case. This is a great value addition to these earbuds.
You also get a Free UA MapMyFitness premium membership for 12 months. This is an added advantage for the anyone who makes the purchase. The membership costs $29.99 per year, which you will be getting for free with these buds.
The talk through mode and the ambient aware mode are the other two special features in these buds. The Talk Through mode lowers the music and allows the speech to amplified for quick conversation on the go. The Ambient aware mode lets the user aware of the surroundings. This feature is important while you walk on the streets to avoid any dangers.
The UA Project Rock True Wireless X keeps up with the high expectations when it comes to audio quality. JBL is known for their prominent bass and these buds are engineered with JBL sound signature. The snug fit with the ear tips and the ear fins amplifies the bass. The highs, mids and lows are well balanced, and it makes the audio output complete. However, there is more prominence to the bass which makes these buds ideal to use during your fitness sessions. It gives the extra energy you need to push your self during your workout in the gym.
There is no significant sound separation compared to other major brands like the Apple Airpods or the Sennheiser Momentum 2. However, UA Project Rock True Wireless X truly wireless earbuds do provide great audio quality and it ranks amongst the top brands in the market.
The UA Project Rock True Wireless X does not come with Active Noise Cancelation. It has good passive noise cancelations thanks to the secure fit. Make sure to try out the three sizes of ear tips and the three sizes of ear fins which are given with the buds. if you find the suitable size, you will enjoy perfect passive noise isolations. While testing, the noises on the background were completely flushed. The conversations around me were muffled, but we had no disturbances to the music.
The UA Project Rock True Wireless X comes with 10-hours of uninterrupted battery life which is amongst the most long lasting truly wireless earbuds in the market. The buds are equipped with 120mAh Polymer Lithium-Ion batteries and with the additional 40 hours from the case gives enough playback time for the user. It would take approximately two hours to charge the buds from zero to full capacity.
While testing the buds lasting more than 9.5 hours which is still better than a lot of brands out there in the market.
The charging case adds another 40 hours of playback for the buds. Unfortunately, it does not support quick charge to the buds. The charging case has a USB Type-C port and four LED lights to show the battery level of the charging case. The all-Aluminum design is unique to these buds and it gives the case a rich look. The downside of it is that the case is heavier than most other designs in the market.
JBL have added a solution for it through adding an extra carrying case, which is smaller in size and much lighter in weight. However, this carrying case does not support charging. Another drawback is that the charging case does not support wireless charging.
Call quality is same to what you got with the previous model. The microphone is decent, but the sound quality is not so great. The Earbuds does a poor job of rejecting background noise. You can hear the noises while on call. This microphone does a poor job in windy days or in a lot of background noises. If your office colleague is on a call next to you, the person on the other end of your call will probably hear it.
For connectivity, the buds use Bluetooth 5.0 which enables the dual connect feature. There is no lag when it comes Video streaming and there were not any interruptions during the testing. We had good connectivity inside our 750 sq Ft room.
The UA Project Rock True Wireless X are right up there with the best when it comes to its features and performance. The battery life is one of the main reasons these buds will attract a lot of people. However, the heavy charging case and the absence of the mobile application could go against these buds.
