How is the battery life while using Active Noise Cancelation? These are a few questions that we looked at while testing the product. However, it is undoubtedly one of the best truly wireless earbuds in the market.
First, let us look at the Pro’s
Active noise cancelation is a topic broad spoken when it comes to headphones and earbuds. It a benchmark all headphone brands would want to achieve. Sony already had the technology in their over-ear headphones, but the first time they added ANC to earbuds was with the launch of the Sony Noise Cancelling Earbuds.
Sony beat almost every other competitor in the truly wireless earbuds market with the launch of the WF 1000XM3. Mainly due to the quality of the audio and active noise cancelation. The Apple Airpods was launched a few months before, and even though it was cheaper than these Sony earbuds, the Airpods could not compete with these.

Active noise cancelations drain a lot of battery, and that is why many brands struggle to use this technology and have a decent enough battery life. Sony conquered the problem and managed to include Active Noise Cancelation and guaranteed 6 hours of battery life. Other earbuds with Active Noise Cancelation, such as the Airpod Pros’ only last 4.5 hours with Active Noise Cancelation.
Without Active Noise Cancelation, the Sony WF 1000XM3 would last up to 8 hours. Sony guarantees four hours of uninterrupted talk time. The charging case would add another eighteen hours of playback with ANC, which means getting through the with these buds would not be an issue.
Sony WF 1000XM3 uses two microphones to listen to all ambient noises and modulate the isolation according to your surroundings. There are four preset levels in the app which are staying, walking, running, and transport. You could select one of the presets using the mobile application, which will determine how much noise cancelation is needed.
You also have the option of using the “focus on Voice” option from the app. While selecting the Adaptive Sound Control mode, you will find a tick box that says focus on sound. By ticking it, you would be able to hear voices around you, so in a case where you are at the office, if one person calls out your name, you would be able to listen to it.
Sony WF 1000XM3 uses Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity. It is the latest and best Bluetooth version in the market. In the line of sight, it is guaranteed uninterrupted connectivity until 30 ft. It is ideal for video streaming as it is no lag between the audio and video.
Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) HX is a unique feature in the Sony WF 1000XM3. It enhances compressed audio files and brings them up a similar level of a high-resolution audio file. This technology would be useful while listening to voice recordings on social media.
The Sony WF 100XM3 biggest downfall is the fact that it does not have water resistance. Any other major brand that manufactures truly wireless earbuds makes sure to add this feature so that I allow the user to use these earbuds during their workout sessions. If you are a person who sweats a lot, then you would have to be worried about wearing these to your workout sessions.
When you compare the price of these Sony WF 1000XM3, which is 229$, consumers would think twice before making the purchase. You could quickly go for a cheaper brand that guarantees water resistance. However, minor drips of sweat or water would be an issue, but if something goes wrong, you wouldn’t claim the warranty.
Sony did an excellent job in the battery department, but they have left out an important feature: wireless charging. Brands like Samsung Galaxy Buds and Airpod Pro come with a wireless charging case convenient for the user who uses power sharing enabled smartphone.
The charging comes with a USB Type-C charger, which would suffice most times, but if a customer expects full portability, they would expect the charging case to support wireless charging.
The main reason why there is a growing market for truly wireless earbuds is that it is portable. It is very convenient to carry around and use it all day. We can all agreed that over-ear headphones provide much better quality in audio and noise cancelation. If the earbuds are not convenient enough to carry around with all day, it is a problem.
The Sony WF 1000XM3 is big compare to the Samsung Galaxy buds and the Airpod Pro. But the real problem here is the size of the charging case. It is about twice the size of the Apple Airpod Pro charging case. This could go against Sony if the consumer is specific when it comes to convenience.
The Sony WF 1000XM3 is designed compactly so that the buds do not stick out from the ear. It is made of hard plastic, and one each bud weighs approximately 0.3oz. It comes in 2 sizes, black, and silver. The rigid plastic design makes it easy to grip. In the box, you would find six ear tip pairs. Its three sizes of triple comfort ear tips and four sizes of long hybrid silicone ear tips. One material has been softer than the other. You can choose to suit your need.
The biggest downfall when it comes to design and its durability is that it is not waterproof or sweatproof. It does not have a protective nano-coating to keep away the water. This could be one of the main reasons why a consumer would think twice before making the purchase decision. However, it is by far one of the most comfortable pairs of earbuds to wear all day.

There are few unique features such as quick attention mode, which immediately turn down the music, call sound, and ringtone to let ambient sound come in. It is a convenient way of paying attention to when someone is talking to you while listening to some music. You won’t be needed to take off the earbuds.
One of the best features of the app is the Adaptive Sound Control. It detects your actions and the surroundings and automatically controls the noise cancelation levels to suit your need. There are four preset modes in the app names Staying, Walking, Running, and Transport. Each way has its noise cancelation level. As an example, Walking manner will have slightly less noise conception compare to staying mode so that you could a vehicle passing by.
All these four modes come with another feature where you can enable it to focus on voice, which will let you hear if someone calls out your name. These modes can be edited using the app, and you could also set modes according to a few frequent locations you visit every day.
When building these truly wireless earbuds, Sony wanted to match the same quality they provided through their noise-canceling over-ear headphones. Did they achieve it? Well, it is not the same, but it is very close. Sony has always been amongst the top-ranked audio equipment manufacturers in the world. These Sony WF 1000XM3 is a perfect example for it
The earbuds come with a 0.24” Dome Type Driver unit that provides well-balanced audio inside the ear. It uses dual noise sensor technology, which uses two microphones to feed-forward and back to catch more ambient noises where ever you use the buds.
The highs are well balanced; there is a minimum to no distortion from these earbuds. The mids are well controlled, and there enough and more punch in the bass department. Overall, it has well-balanced sound output.
The Sony WF 1000XM3 comes with one of the best active noise cancelations. It uses a high definition noise-canceling processor QN1e for high-performance noise cancelation and high-quality audio. You also get a dual noise sensor that uses two microphones to detect ambient noise and control it according to the setting. This QN1e processing chip’s significance is that it uses less power, which prolongs the battery life in the earbuds.
Sony guarantees 6 hours of constant battery life with active noise cancelation switched on. Without ANC, it could last up to 8 hours. It also guarantees 4 hours of continuous talk time. It would take approximately 1.5 hours to fully charge the earbuds using the charging case. These numbers are much better when compared with other noise-canceling earbuds such as the Apple Airpod Pro and Sennheiser Momentum 2.
The charging is designed using rigid plastic, and it has a creamy matte finish. It comes with a USB Type-C charging facility, but unfortunately, it does not support wireless charging. The case weight approximately 2.8oz, which is a touch higher than the Apple Aipod Pro charging case, but it is insignificant. However, it takes about 3.5 hours to charge the case fully, and once it is fully charged, it will provide three full charging cycles for the earbuds.
The charging case also supports quick charging; a quick ten-minute charge would give 1.5 hours of playback from the earbuds. When you want to pair these earbuds to the phone, you could use NFC as well. You can find the NFC logo right in front of the case. The case is built with a magnet inside to keep the earbuds glued so that you have less chance of losing them.
Sony WF 1000XM3 uses Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity. It guarantees a 10-meter wireless range. What’s significant about these earbuds is the fact that the Bluetooth antenna is placed in housing. It helps the connection to be more impressive. However, you cannot connect more than one device simultaneously, unlike the Jabra Elite Active 75t.
The call quality is excellent as well. The mics pick up the voice and isolate it from the rest of the noises so that the receiver can hear you.
