Edifier NB2 - Pros and Cons

The Edifier NB2 comes with decent battery performance even with active noise cancelation switched on. These buds also offer water resistance, which is key feature consumers look for in truly wireless earbuds. To add more value to these buds, there is also a mobile app for users to customize the audio output and enjoy few more features, which we will dive into in the review.

Edifier NB2 Earbuds Pros

IPX54 water resistance rating

The Edifier NB2 has gotten rid of the IPX4 water/dustproof rating of its predecessor, replacing it with a much less weather-sealed IP54. These aren’t sealed against dust and they only protect against light water splashing. That said, IPX54 is perfectly acceptable for most earbuds, and the Edifier TWS NB2 can be used during your workout sessions or jogging sessions.

Active Noise Cancelation

The Edifier NB2s comes with decent active noise cancelation performance. They have added a second pair of microphones inside the ear tips so that they can react better to sounds by hearing what is still getting through. This technology is referred to as Hybrid ANC and is becoming increasingly common in high-end truly wireless earbuds that generally cost way more than the Edifier NB2’s. The noise-canceling is much improved compared to the previous model and competes very well with other Hybrid ANC systems out there. However, it still comes up short when you compare it with big brands such as the Sony WF-1000XM3s, the Apple AirPods Pro, or the Sennheiser Momentum 2s. But you should remember all four of those buds cost way more than the Edifier NB2 earbuds.

7 hours of battery life with ANC

The Edifier NB2 comes with 7 hours of playback time with ANC active. That ranks amongst the top, and it is much more battery life you would get with the AirPods Pro. With ANC off, the Edifier NB2 lasts for more than 9 hours. You can get an additional 18 hours of charge with ANC on and 23 additional hours with ANC off with the charging case. Unfortunately, Edifier NB2 does not come with a fast-charging feature. That said, you could fully charge them in an hour.

Bluetooth 5.0

The Edifier NB2 uses Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity. The official website guarantees uninterrupted connection up to 10 linear feet. There is no visible latency when it comes to video streaming on YouTube or Netflix. The connections did not get interrupted in our testing studio which is roughly 1000 sq. Ft, at any given time which is the benchmark of truly wireless earbuds.

Edifier TWS NB2 Con

Narrow soundstage

Even though we concluded that the Edifier NB2 has a decent sound output, If we had one complaint, it’s that the soundstage is a bit narrow. The highs don’t reach too much, which many who are don’t enjoy strong treble will actually appreciate, and the low range is also largely contained. The mids are well represented, though. The experience can be summed up as listening to a band play at a house party than watching them perform at the Amphitheater.

Issues with the controls

The small physical buttons which came in the previous Edifier NB have been replaced by two touch sensors on each bud. The controls are very limited, you can’t control volume from them and you can’t customize them to your specifications. However, all controls require at least a double-tap which prevents accidental taps. The bright side is that you can change the sensitivity of those features using the app, but it is not sufficient to fully eradicate the issue.

Design and Durability

The Edifier TWS NB2 comes in both white and black color options. Regardless of the color, the earbuds have a silver stem which gives the earbuds a different look compared to most other brands in the market. Even though it looks metallic on the outside, the earbuds have a plastic construction which helps them be very lightweight. The whole design has a matte finish which helps hide scratches or scuffs. The earbuds also have an angular design, with multiple flat sides along the stem of each earbud. The stems are included with touch controls and the part of the earbud that goes within the ear has a rounded shape, giving it a comfortable and secure fit. The buds come with an ear detection sensor that will automatically play and pause what you are listening to when the earbuds and used and taken out of your ear. The rubber ear tips also fit well within the ear and there are three other sizes included in the box if you wish to use a larger or smaller size. The buds come with an IPX54 water-resistant rating, which allows the user to make full use of these buds. These could withstand light water splashes and you can use these while working out in the gym or having a jog during the day.

Control and Digital Assistant

The Edifier NB2 comes with touch-capacitive controls on either bud. These controls cannot be customized through the app. There is no way of controlling the volume through the buds or skipping back in your tracks, which is one of the major drawbacks of these buds.

App and Special Features

The earbuds also support Edifier’s Connect app, which allows you to control earbud functions from your mobile device. The app allows you to change a range of settings for the earbuds such as touch control sensitivity and mode narration volume. The app unfortunately does not support any EQ customization. The earbuds also support a low-latency gaming mode which can provide as low as 80ms latency. The earbuds also feature an ambient sound mode that allows the user to hear what’s happening in the surroundings. The mode can be used when you are out and about and in need to be aware of your surroundings, or if you need to have a conversation with someone

Audio Quality

The TWS NB2 earbuds come with 10mm drivers which have a composite diaphragm that provides a well-balanced sound. The bass, mid and treble frequencies all blend well and offer a decent audio experience. Listening to indie and pop, the earbuds also provide a good balance and decent sound separation. The bass is strong but it does not overpower everything else. The mids and the highs provide good clarity for vocals and percussion instruments.

Noise Cancelation

The Edifier NB2 comes with active noise cancellation. It uses a technology called hybrid ANC, which is common among most brands. It uses advanced electro-acoustics technology and an algorithm developed by Edifier, which elevates its noise cancellation to -40dB. During testing, we found the ANC to work well at drowning out low-pitched noises, but it struggled with canceling out high-pitched noise. You simply cannot compare to ANC performance in the Apple Airpod Pro, with these buds. The quality is much higher, and so is the price.

Battery and Performance

The TWS NB2 comes with a battery life of up to 7 hours with ANC on a single charge, and it can be extended to an additional 18 hours by the charging case. If you choose to turn ANC off, you can enjoy another couple of extra hours, with 9 on a single charge and an additional 23 hours from the charging case. Even though there is no mention of fast charging, it will only take around an hour to fully charge the buds.

Charging Case

The microphone quality of the TWS NB2 is decent enough to be recommended. However, if we are to be skeptical, it is not the clearest microphone and it sounds slightly muffled. The microphones pick up my voice to an audible volume which is sufficient to make phone calls or voice memos. The microphones also use noise cancellation to drown out the background noise. The TWS NB2 features Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity which uses the SBC audio codec. Earbud pairing works smoothly and the earbuds connect swiftly when it is taken in and out of the case. The music will automatically start playing as soon as you put the earbuds in your ears, thanks to the in-ear senses on either bud.

Call Quality & Connectivity

The mics do a good job of picking up the voice in crowded noisy areas. Even though you sound more digital, it provides good clarity which is important when it comes to calls. These buds also use the latest Bluetooth version, Bluetooth 5.2. It has much improved features including high quality, low-power audio codec called the Low Complexity Communications Coded (LC3). LC3 provides high quality even at lower data rates than the standard SBC codec used in Bluetooth Classic implementations. It also increases efficiency when it comes to power consumption. This technology provides extremely low latency which is perfect for movies and games.

Final Say

The Edifier NB2 is unique in many ways. It is a decent pair of earbuds with a decent price range. However, if you wish to enjoy a great active noise cancelation experience, these buds would not be satisfactory. You might as well save up a little more and opt for Apple Airpods pro. Saying that these buds are of real value given the price tag and the sleek design makes it attractive.
